A Los Lunas police officer has shot and killed a man after officers responded to a domestic violence call near I-25 and Main St. on Tuesday afternoon.
Los Lunas Police Chief Roy Melnick says police responded to a domestic dispute in progress on Longbow Loop, east of I-25.
The woman involved fled to a neighbor’s residence. When police arrived, the man left the home with a gun and fired several shots at Sgt. Robert Ferreyra. The officer fired back, hitting the man.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene about 3:30 p.m. He was later identified as Fred Salas, 48, a resident of Los Lunas.
The Los Lunas Police Department has turned the case over to the New Mexico State Police. Late Tuesday state police investigators said based on the evidence, they agree that the shooting was justified.
Sgt. Ferreyra has been placed on standard administrative leave.
